Why The Team At Blue Eco Homes Is So Dedicated

To Building the Healthiest, Most Comfortable, Energy Efficient Homes in the Blue Mountains and beyond

Our Story

We've always been driven in our own paths—Joe as a skilled and ambitious builder, and Merylese as a dedicated and compassionate Respiratory Clinical Nurse Consultant. Together, it was only natural that we would set out to achieve something bigger, something that would make a real difference in our world.

Sustainability has been part of our lives from the very beginning. Joe grew up watching his dad collect rainwater and reuse laundry water—practices that weren’t common in suburban life but became second nature to him. Our time in Scouts and Guides gave us a deep appreciation for the natural environment, which only grew stronger when we moved to the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains after getting married in 1990.

Joe started his career as an apprentice carpenter in the commercial construction industry, working his way up to site manager, overseeing multi-million-dollar projects. But he always wanted more of a challenge—so in 2003, after 19 years in commercial construction, he took a leap of faith, put his tool belt back on, and started his own building company, then known as Joe Mercieca Constructions.

At the time, Merylese was working at a local hospital as a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Consultant. With three young kids and a new business to grow, we knew we had to balance financial stability with our long-term vision. As word spread about our work, our business steadily grew—we expanded our team and took on bigger and better projects.

High-quality homes have always been our focus, but sustainability has been part of our DNA from the start. We simply knew that building responsibly meant building better, for people and the planet.

For most builders, construction is just a career. But for the Blue Eco Homes team,

building healthy, comfortable, energy efficient homes is a mission

And it’s personal.

From Vision to Validation

In 2010, sustainability was still more of a buzzword than a priority in the building industry, but we wanted to prove it was possible. So, we bought land in Winmalee and started designing our own sustainable home. The materials we needed weren’t easily available in the residential market, and many people told us we were crazy to take on such a challenge. But we didn’t back down.
When we completed our home—a 7.2-star energy-rated house—it was a huge achievement. And more importantly, it showed us what was possible.

At that point, Merylese made the decision to step away from hospital nursing and take on a full-time role in the business. That’s when we officially launched Blue Eco Homes as a family-run company.

Joe’s passion for building, combined with Merylese’s healthcare expertise, equipped us to become leaders in sustainable building. Our commitment to ongoing innovation and education has made us sought-after industry advisors and conference speakers.

The 2013 Springwood / Winmalee Bushfires:
A Turning Point

Our journey took a heartbreaking turn in 2013 when the Springwood/Winmalee bushfires tore through our community. Like so many others in the Blue Mountains, we suffered a devastating loss—our office and workshop was completely destroyed. The experience was both deeply personal and profoundly motivating.

Losing our office and workshop reinforced everything we believed in. We saw firsthand the destruction that bushfires could bring and knew that we had to do more. It wasn't just about rebuilding; it was about finding better ways to construct homes that could withstand these extreme conditions.

That experience strengthened our resolve. We committed ourselves to not just building sustainable homes, but homes that were also resilient in the face of bushfire threats. It led us to refine our approach, ensuring our designs offered both energy efficiency and fire resilience.

A Family-Driven Mission

Our kids have been part of this journey from the start. Even in primary school, they were passionate about sustainability—debating their teachers on the topic and advocating for change. Now, as adults, they each contribute to the business and our mission in their own way. Our youngest, Beth, even followed in Joe’s footsteps, completing her carpentry apprenticeship under his guidance and taking on a permanent role in the future of our business.

But our commitment to sustainable homes isn’t just professional—it’s personal. Two of our three children suffered from asthma and respiratory issues every winter. When we moved from a conventional house into our new sustainable home, their symptoms disappeared completely. That experience cemented our belief in the power of sustainable building—not just for the environment, but for health, comfort, and energy efficiency.

We’ve always pushed the boundaries, constantly searching for ways to improve performance, quality, and innovation. That pursuit led us to Passivhaus—a world-leading building standard for comfort and energy efficiency. Following Joe’s mindset of “no challenge is too big,” we trained our staff and built our first passive home in 2019. That house, "Sapphire," was the equal 1st certified Passive House in NSW and was also the first certified Passivhaus in the world built to flame zone standards.

Today, we’re proud to bring certified Passivhaus homes to the Blue Mountains and beyond. But more than that, we’re passionate about helping people build homes that truly work for them. We know that not everyone wants a fully passive or solar passive home, and that’s okay. Our goal is to give people real options—so they can live as sustainably as possible in a way that suits their lifestyle.

For us, this isn’t just a business. It’s a mission. Having experienced firsthand the difference a sustainable home can make, we’re more determined than ever to help others enjoy the same benefits.

Beth Mercieca

As the youngest child of Joe and Merylese, Beth has always harboured a deep passion for the construction industry. Growing up alongside her two siblings, she spent countless hours on building sites with Joe, where her enthusiasm earned her the affectionate nickname "Chicken" from Joe, as she loved to be in his shadow whenever onsite.

Beth initially pursued a different path, working as a qualified hair and makeup artist in the Film and TV industry while casually labouring alongside the Blue Eco Homes team.

In 2019, driven by her unwavering passion for construction, Beth made a bold move, trading her makeup belt for a full-time toolbelt and embarking on an apprenticeship with Blue Eco Homes. She successfully completed her Certificate III in Carpentry and became a certified Passivhaus tradesperson and Blower Door Technician, focusing on sustainable and high-performing building practices.

Currently, Beth is working towards her Certificate IV in Building and Construction, with aspirations of collaborating closely with her parents for the future of Blue Eco Homes. In recognition of her dedication, Beth was honoured as the HIA-CSR Australian Apprentice of the Year in 2023.
